Cash lights up parade

Youngsters are set to light up their town in a luminous celebration of one of history's most famous sea battles after council chiefs won lottery cash.

Bakewell Town Council and the Babbling Vagabonds education theatre group have been working on a project to help the town join national celebrations of Trafalgar Day on October 21 – the 200th anniversary of the battle.

Their joint application to the National Lottery's Awards For All Scheme has earned a 4,400 grant and plans are afoot to launch a lantern parade through the town.

A beacon will be lit at Grants Field, near St Anselm's School, as part of the evening of celebration, with youngsters afterwards marching through the streets in a trail of light carrying home-made lanterns.

Cllr Bill Kirkland, deputy mayor of Bakewell, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive the award because the mayor, Cllr Christine Brough, and the Babbling Vagabonds have put in a lot of work.

"It will give the town a higher profile and allow us to do something to celebrate a memorable day that we would not otherwise have been able to do.

"I would urge all residents to come out and take part in the celebrations."

The Babbling Vagabonds, based in Bath Street, are now planning a workshop at Bakewell Town Hall where youngsters can make lanterns to take part in the parade.

Phil Coggins, joint artistic director, said: "We are delighted to be doing a lantern procession again in Bakewell, because we haven't done one in a number of years.

"It is great that the people of Bakewell will be able to commemorate a day of this magnitude in an artistic way."

October 21 is the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, when Lord Horatio Nelson led a 27-strong fleet of British ships to victory over 33 French and Spanish ships off the coast of Cadiz, Spain.

Nelson – hailed as the Navy's greatest hero – lost his life alongside 700 British sailors, with 7,000 of the enemy being killed.

* Latern making sessions will take place at Bakewell Town Hall on Friday October 14, 5.30pm-8.30pm; Sunday October 16, from 10.15am-1.15pm and 2.30pm-5.30pm; Monday October 17 from 5.30pm-8.30pm; and Wednesday October 19, from 5.30pm-8.30pm.
