Camper stole from a home for a ‘prank’
AN OUTING in Derbyshire could have led to jail for a boozy camper who raided a house as a “prank”.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how Callum Andrews was camping with pals when he wandered into a conservatory at Moor House, Sydnope Hill, Darley Moor.
Occupants heard their dogs barking during the night and looked outside but saw nothing, according to the court.
But the following morning they found coats and caps missing from the unlocked conservatory.
The householder traced the campers as they were packing up and he noted a car registration and informed police who contacted the owner and were told Andrews had committed the offence. Officers went to Andrews’ home and recovered stolen baseball caps from the raid in September.
Sarah Haslam, prosecuting, said: “He said his actions were a prank.”
Andrews, 21, of Mansfield Road, Skegby, near Sutton-in-Ashfield, admitted burglary with theft. Deputy District Judge Andrew Davison imposed a community sentence. The part-time shop worker received a 16 week curfew and 200 hours unpaid work. He must pay £318 compensation with £85 costs.
Joe Harvey, defending, said: “It wasn’t a burglary in the traditional sense. He and his friends went for a very short camping trip somewhere in the forest towards Matlock and drinks were consumed. They decided to go for a walk and he ended up on private property. A lot of the stuff was abandoned and found by the owner. He has written a letter of apology.”
