Bug shuts ward at Chesterfield Royal

A ward at Chesterfield Royal Hospital has been shut following an outbreak of the vomiting bug norovirus.

Manvers ward will remain closed to visitors until all current patients have been symptom free for 48 hours.

In total 14 patients, five staff and three relatives were struck down by the bug, which causes sudden vomiting and diarrhoea and feverish symptoms.

A spokesman for Chesterfield Royal Hospital said: "There are currently nine patients on the ward with no symptoms. We are holding back re-opening the ward as a pre-cautionary measure until the 48 hour symptom-free period has passed."

Manvers ward has now been closed for seven days and will undergo a deep clean before it is re-opened.

Doctors estimate more than 100,000 people across the country are catching norovirus every week.
