LEGION: Members of the Bakewell branch of the Royal British Legion Women's Section gathered, along with members from the Allenton, Allestree, Brimington, Littleover, Wirksworth and Chesterfield branches at Wirksworth town hall for the fifth get together of branches within the Bakewell and District and Southern Derbyshire groups.

The evening started with the act of homage by Wirksworth chairman, Mts Enid Gratton, and she then welcomed everyone to the town, saying it was a privilege for Wirksworth to be chosen to hold the event.

The ladies from Littleover acted as hostesses for ther evening, serving a wonderful bring-and-share buffet provided by the branches attending.

Newly-elected national chairman of the Woman's Section, Mrs Cecilia Harper from Chesterfield, presented awards including county certificates of appreciation for outstanding work which went to Mrs Enid Gratton and Mrs Celia Lightfoor from Littleover.

She also presented Mrs C. Crowther, vice-president of the Bakwell Branch, with a 75th anniversary certificate and Mrs Lynne Pheasey — Bakewell's treasurer and standard bearer, with a merit award — a national honour gioven to a member who has contributed outstanding service.

Mrs Pheasey said she was extremely honoured and it made this year even more memorable as the Bakewell branch celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Mrs Harper commented that it was a great pleasure to present the awards to such deserving ladies and thanked and praised them for their hard work.

Entertainment was provided by the St Helen's Singers from Derby. The raffle was drawn by the national chairman and the ladies of Mickleover won almost every prize, interspersed with a lady from Bakewell and Youlgreave.

Mrs Jennifer Ratcliffe, chairman of the Mickleover branch, offered the vote of thanks. She thanked the ladies of Littleover for acting as hostesses, praised the quailty of the entertainment and thanked county secretary Mrs Angela Swift for her sterling efforts in helping to organise the annual event.
