ASHGATE: Pedlars arrested thanks to residents

Residents have been thanked for alerting police to two doorstep traders who were calling at homes without certificates.

Officers were called after reports of two men selling goods at homes on Loxley Close, Ashgate, at around 12.30pm on Friday, January 25.

A 27-year-old man and a 29-year-old man from Nottingham were arrested for peddling without a licence.

They have been reported to court under the Pedlars Act 1871 and could face a fine.

Police have been encouraging residents to ask to see a doorstep trader’s pedlar’s certificate to help reduce the potential for distraction type burglaries.

Pedlar’s certificates are valid for 12 months and are issued by police in the area where the seller lives.

Community safety Insp Russell Dakin said: “Residents are right to ask to see a pedlar’s certificate from anyone trying to sell goods at the door and to report anyone suspicious to us.

“Our advice continues to be that if someone calls at your door unexpectedly, always make sure your home is secure, use a door chain and ask for identification. Remember if you don’t feel sure about them then don’t open the door.”
