Arson theory in firework attack
Breaking news
Detectives are investigating a suspected arson attack after a firework was pushed through the letterbox of a house in Chesterfield.
At around 1am today, police were called to a house on St Augustine’s Avenue after the homeowner was woken up by the smoke alarm.
They went downstairs to find the kitchen filled with smoke and a firework – which appeared to have been pushed through the letterbox – on the floor.
Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: “We are treating this incident seriously and would urge anyone with information about who is responsible to come forward.
“Whoever did this may have thought it was a prank but it could have had devastating consequences.
“Not only were they putting people’s lives in danger but they could have caused serious damage to someone’s home.
“Thankfully no one was injured and the house was fitted with a smoke alarm.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
