Archaeology group scoops top award
A local history group has won a British Archaeological Award for its excavation of the Iron Age hill fort site at Fin Cop.
Longstone Local History Group won the accolade for the best community archaeology project in the 2010 awards presented at the British Museum.
Last summer 160 schoolchildren and 80 volunteers helped excavations funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The three-week dig, overlooking Monsal Dale in the Peak District National Park, unearthed a female skeleton and baby dating from 400-200 BC, along with hundreds of prehistoric pottery shards and tools. As a result a further 49,900 of lottery money was received for a five-week dig this summer, which ends on August 6.
