Derbyshire homeowners are being urged to keep their keys well away from letterboxes and cat flaps.
Sometime between 9.15am and 5.30pm last Thursday, a would-be thief tried to use a fishing net left by the back door of a house in River Bank Way in Glossop to hook the house keys through the cat flap.
The family returned home to find the cat flap broken but no access had been gained to the house.
Following the incident, police are offering residents the following advice:
- Don't leave your house keys on display
- Don't leave them near a letterbox or cat flap where someone may be able to reach them
- Never leave spare keys under doormats, plant pots or in other obvious locations
