She won the hearts of Labour members when she told of the effect that the NHS has had on her own family.

“When I was growing up, I thought that a hospital was just a place where I’d been born, but my dad, a police officer, was seriously wounded in the line of duty and an NHS hospital saved his sight,” she said.

“The NHS is Labour’s greatest achievement and a proud example of the way that this party has improved life for generations of ordinary people and their families.

“Mid Derbyshire is a widespread constituency, and people living in Borrowash and Allestree, Spondon and Belper, need a candidate who will defend their right to jobs, public services and a welfare state that gives people a hand up, not a kick back.

“I will fight Pauline Latham for votes in every corner of Mid Derbyshire and will work with Derbyshire’s excellent Labour MPs to ensure that Ed Miliband leads a Labour Government after the 2015 General Election.”

Nottingham City councillor and cabinet member, Ms Heaton describes herself as coming from the ‘squeezed middle’ background, identified by Labour Leader, Ed Miliband.

She said that the 1997 General Election was “a pivotal moment for me, as I saw how politics could inspire in people hope for a better, more equal country.”

The chairman of Mid Derbyshire Labour Party, Hardyal Dhindsa, contested the seat himself in 2010 and pronounced the party to be in ‘tremendous shape’ to take on Tory MP, Mrs Latham.

‘We’re in the best shape ever as a political organisation and we’re really privileged to have the enthusiasm, community skill and experience of an outstanding candidate,” he said.

“I look forward to working with her as she shows the Tories that no constituency is ‘off limits’ for Labour and that in Nicola Heaton, the people of Mid Derbyshire have a representative who will be their champion and put them and their families first.’ In 2010 Mrs Latham claimed 22,877 – or 48.3 per cent – of the total votes. Hardyal Dhindsa received 11,585 votes.

The Mid-Derbyshire constituency was created for the 2010 election following the Boundary Commission for England’s review of Parliamentary representation.
