Cllr Judith Twigg boosted the funds of two Bakewell organisations to the tune of more than £5,400 in total during her year as chairman of the District of Derbyshire Dales.
A Bakewell ward member on Derbyshire Dales District Council, Cllr Twigg named two local causes – Bakewell All Saints Church roof fund and the Bakewell Town and Community Trust – as the beneficiaries of the chairman’s fundraising efforts in 2010/11.
She has now presented £2,717 to each of the groups after organising fundraising events and representing the district council at more than 200 functions during the past year.
Lay Reader at All Saints Church, Pat Bryant said: “The parish church is very grateful for the hard work Judith put into raising funds during her year as chairman of the district. The money is desperately needed to help fund the vital maintenance projects currently ongoing in the church”.
Also receiving a cheque at a reception in Bakewell Town Hall was David Walker, chairman of Bakewell Town and Community Trust, a volunteer group whose aim is to make the town hall more accessible for local groups and people. He said: “The Community Trust are delighted Judith made us one of her designated charities for her busy year in office and her donations will go a long way in helping us further develop the town hall.”
Mrs Twigg who is also a county councillor, was chairman of the district previously in 1992 and as former mayor of Bakewell on three occasions she has now held a chair of office five times.
She said: “I relished the opportunity to promote the Derbyshire Dales during my year as chairman of the district and I was absolutely determined also to do something positive for two hard working local groups that are close to my heart and do so much for the local community.”
Cllr Tony Milward from Ashbourne took over as chairman of the district at the start of 2012/13 civic year.
