THE BOXING promoter dad of a talented Derbyshire singer who burst into tears after the comments she received live on Britain’s Got Talent has hit out at judge Simon Cowell.
Dennis Hobson says he has written a letter of complaint to the multi-millionaire music mogul after his daughter, Jessica Hobson, of Killamarsh, was slated in front of millions of viewers during the semi-finals of the ITV talent show last Thursday.
However, show producers have hit back.
The audience booed Mr Cowell after 19-year-old Jessica sang Beyonce’s hit Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).
He said: “It started fine, then it got increasingly worse. You would have been better singing on your own, not with the silly dress.”
Jessica said she didn’t have a say in her song choice then welled up and had to be comforted by the show’s co-host Declan Donnelly.
Speaking exclusively to the Derbyshire Times, Mr Hobson said his daughter was told what song to sing and told to wear the dress she wore.
“It makes a bit of a sham of the show,” he claimed.
“I was there and I got a bit upset for her – she didn’t deserve those comments. I thought she did great and she’s got a lot of support and a bright future ahead of her.”
Mr Hobson revealed he had written a letter to 51-year-old Mr Cowell, telling him he was “unjustified” in his sharp comments. “He hasn’t written back yet,” added Mr Hobson.
A Britain’s Got Talent spokesman said: “All acts work closely with members of production, a musical director and a choreographer on song choices and performances for the live shows. At the end of the day, contestants choose what they are going to perform and no-one is made to do anything they don’t want to do.”
