Chesterfield Royal Hospital has issued a warning to residents as its emergency department comes under extreme pressure.

Bosses are urging people to only attend the A&E ward in the event of an emergency.

A hospital spokesman said: "Our emergency department is really under pressure and we would urge you to think about how you would use our service.

"Can you self treat with a plaster or a cold and flu remedy? Could you visit your GP? Would a trip to the pharmacy, opticians or dentist get you what you need? Can you give 111 a call?

"Our emergency department is for serious injuries such as broken bones and deep wounds, breathing difficulties, choking, chest pains, blackouts - basically emergencies!

"Please consider if there are other, more appropriate options and help us to give the time and care we need to concentrate on genuine emergencies."
