High Peak writer pens trilogy on wartime Hayfield

A High Peak historian is writing a trilogy of book about Hayfield during the war to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War on August 4.

Part One of George Cogswell’s Hayfield at War series will focus on 1914 to 1916, Part Two will cover 1917 to 1926 and Part Three will be about the Second World War.

With the help of Hayfield Civic Trust, the author has completed extensive research on the people who are commemorated on Hayfield’s several war memorials.

He said: “The record of their lives and service are interspersed with articles mainly from the local papers at that time. These publications not only stand as a tribute to the men women and one child of the district who were killed but a fascinating insight into the lives and events within the parish throughout these troubled times.”

George expects to publish Part One before the centenary and Part Two, shortly after. Part Three is still at the early stages and may be a year or two before publication.

George would like to include as many photographs of those who lost their lives as possible and is appealing for help.
