Former English Light Welterweight champion Gavin Down is packing a punch as he helps to keep youngsters out of trouble and is developing some great prospects for the future of boxing.

The 36 year-old originally set up Bolsover Boxing Club in a room at the Appletree Inn, at Stanfree, before it moved to a canteen at Brockley Primary and now boasts a packed gym at Unit 3, Bolsover Business Park, off Woodhouse Lane.

Bolsover Boxing Club also hosted its first fantastic boxing show with strobe lights and lazers at the Arc, in Clowne, In May, and its second event is scheduled for Friday, December 5, with more razamataz and top performances with Amateur Boxing Association fighters from across the region.

Gavin said: “We first set up with somewhere for myself and my mate Rick Henson to train and a few others came along to join us and we ended up needing somewhere bigger and things have just developed from there.”

The non-profit club’s coaches and staff including Gavin, Rick and Richard Hopkinson will not tolerate swearing and instil manners that keep youngsters in line. The gym has about 25 adult members and about 20 youngsters and includes girls and women and prospects who are competing and getting good results. Anyone interested in joining can visit or call Gavin on 0795 635 3796.
