hit targets

EAST Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) are only reaching 42 per cent of the most serious life-threatening calls in the central High Peak area within the government’s target time, new figures show.

Statistics which record the trust’s response times to incidents by postcodes have been released to the Buxton Advertiser this week – and the data shows that less than half of all category A calls in the SK23 area are responded to by EMAS in the government required time of eight minutes.

Out of 236 Category A responses by the trust in the SK23 area – which covers Whaley Bridge, Buxworth, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley, Combs, Furness Vale and Kettleshulme – between April 1 and September 30 this year, only 101 were ‘hit’ within eight minutes – a performance rate of 42.80 per cent.

In the SK17 area, which includes Buxton, Tideswell, Hartington, Longnor and Chelmorton, the performance rate was 73.12 per cent - lower than the government’s target of 75 per cent.

The performance rate for New Mills, Hayfield, Birch Vale, Rowarth - the SK22 area - was 67.37 per cent.

However, the A8 performance rate for Derby City Centre is 93 per cent, while Nottingham City Centre’s figure is 89.74 per cent.

For the A19 category, which means EMAS need to get an ambulance vehicle which can take the patient to hospital within 19 minutes of the call being picked up, the government target is 95 per cent. However, this is also not being met.

In the SK12 area which covers Disley, EMAS responded to four out of five A19 calls within the target time - giving them a performance of 80 per cent.

Their performance rate in the SK17 area was marginally better at 86.15 per cent while in the SK22 area, it dropped to 79.79 per cent.

Across the division as a whole, EMAS’ current performance against both targets is:

lCategory A - 74.98 per cent (to date on November 12)

lCategory B - 94.39 per cent (to date on November 12).

The trust have asked us to point out that: “This data shows what performance is for postcode areas, but we are not commissioned or resourced to meet the performance standards per postcode area.”

East Midlands Ambulance Service are currently consulting on their Being the Best programme, which could see ambulance stations in Buxton and New Mills replaced with community ambulance posts and hubs.

The trust said the programme would lead to faster response times for patients, and mean better support for staff.

If approved, High Peak ambulance crews would have to travel to junction 29 of the M1 – the other side of Chesterfield – to pick up and drop off their vehicle at the start and end of each shift.

The trust have previously fined for missing the government’s targets.
