Winnie, who lives in a block of flats in Chesterfield which doesn’t have a lift, has been housebound for ten years.

Her last trip outside was to celebrate her 90th birthday at Van Dyk Hotel in Clowne. She said: “I can remember we had a nice meal.”

Winnie served in the Women’s Royal Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War. Among the messages of congratulations to arrive in time for her birthday today was a certificate from the Royal Air Force Association, signed by its president Air Marshall Sir Dusty Miller.
