Two local Girl Guide leaders, with a total of over 93 years of service, have been awarded the accolade of joint Citizens of the Year by Chesterfield Rotarians.

Mary Bond and Joan Wadd have given years of dedicated service to the Girl Guide movement, including a total of 66 years between them as warranted leaders.

John Keeton, who presented the award on behalf of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, said: “In presenting this year’s award we are delighted to be able to recognise the years of dedicated voluntary service given so willingly to the Girl Guide movement, and all for the benefit of local youngsters.”

In thanking the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, Joan Wadd said: “We were both pleasantly surprised by the award, and somewhat alarmed when we reckoned up how long we have actually been involved.”

She added: “The Girl Guides continue to thrive and have waiting lists of youngsters wanting to join but we do need more leaders to come forward.”
