Growth deal creates jobs

New jobs and extra training are in the pipeline for Mid-Derbyshire people as part of a £554 million Government investment package across the region.

The opportunities will be created after ministers struck a funding deal with D2N2, the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Projects which will get the maximum benefit for local people will be funded with the money, with D2N2 given total control of awarding the cash to local authorities and businesses to ensure it goes on the projects which will get the maximum benefit for the area.

Pauline Latham, MP for Belper and Mid-Derbyshire welcomed the announcement, saying it would help to give the local area a boost.

She said: “This growth deal is excellent news for people in the Derbyshire area.

“D2N2 do some great work locally, and whilst there are no projects taking place within my constituency, I am sure that my constituents will benefit from the work they are doing to encourage sustainable employment in Derby city.’

Schemes being funded in Derby include Infinity Park (£14.37 million) and Our City Our River (£12 million).

In total £45.6 million has been allocated to the region for 2015/16.

Through its strategic economic plan, D2N2 set an ambition to deliver 55,000 new private sector jobs over the next 10 years in the UK.

Peter Richardson, chairman of D2N2, said: “This growth deal marks the start of an exciting new chapter as we now move from planning to implementation.”

In total over £6 billion of projects will be supported by the Growth Fund across
England in 2015/16, with funding being used to deliver better roads and public transport;
increase the support for small businesses and young people looking for work; and improve internet links, skills and housing availability, strengthening the local economy and
backing businesses to create jobs.

area, help young people in the
region get the skills they need to get on, and ensure the area has the workforce it needs to prosper.

“By trusting local people, backing business and invest in infrastructure, skills and housing, we can create thousands of new jobs.

“And that means more
economic security, peace of mind and a brighter future for hardworking people across the region.”
