Campaigners are celebrating after transport chiefs announced a major step forward with ambitious plans for a cycle network in Chesterfield.

Derbyshire County Council has revealed a new £125,000 bike lane will be created alongside the busy A61 in Chesterfield this month.

The 370m path will be built between Tesco and Whittington Moor roundabout as part of the Chesterfield cycle network – a long-term masterplan which aims to link key roads, shopping areas, hospitals and schools.

Alastair Meikle (pictured above), of the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign, said: “This is a fairly significant step forward. The route will be hugely beneficial to the people of Chesterfield.”

The council said the work is due to start on Monday and is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

During that time the A61 dual carriageway will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Highways chief Cllr Simon Spencer said: “More people are turning to cycling as an alternative to the car and we’re committed to making it easier and safer for people to bike around Derbyshire.

“It’s better for the environment, it’s cheaper than running a car and it’s a great way to stay fit and healthy as well.

“We hope motorists will bear with us while this work takes place and apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused.”
