This week’s Primary Focus features Stretton Handley Church of England Primary School.

The small school of around 50 pupils is close to the Ogsten reservoir on the edge of the Peak District.

Headteacher Julie Dunbar said that the relatively low number of pupils helps teachers keep a close relationship with students.

“It’s very much about the family feel,” she said.

She added that the school’s rural setting provides them a unique opportunity to teach children about the importance of nature.

“As we’re very close to the reservoir we’re keen on birdwatching, We work with the local birdwatching groups and often post things on our website.”

The school has a birdwatching blog, details of nature walks in the area and proud displays of pupils’ work. The school also received a letter praising the school from the Minister of State for Schools in December.
