A mum has died after she was struck down by pneumonia while on holiday in Disneyland Paris in France.
Amy Wain, 28, was on holiday with her daughter Elissa, now six, and twin sister Jessica when she was diagnosed with untreated pneumonia in June.
Amy, of Swanwick, was travelling back to the UK on a ferry when her condition became critical and she had to be air-lifted back to France by helicopter.
Friends helped set up a group, Amy’s Angels, to raise money to enable her family to maintain a bedside vigil. Amy’s mum Debbie flew to France to be with her daughter and was later joined by brother Mark and dad Clive. On October 2 Amy returned to the UK and was in the intensive care unit at Royal Derby Hospital where she seemed to be recovering. But she tragically passed away on November 2.
Twin sister Jessica said: “She was making progress – the nurses were great and the doctors were great. In France it was always up and down whereas in England the doctors were positive. She was working with physiotherapists. She was happy and smiling.”
Jessica said the family had been left “devastated” by her death.
Jessica said: “Before she was poorly we were inseparable – I saw her every single day. To me she was amazing. She was my other half. She was a wonderful mother and I’m sure she would have made an amazing auntie.”
Jessica passed on her thanks to all the people who joined Amy’s Angels to help her family meet travel costs. The group was formed by Amy’s friends at the BP garage in Hartshay where she worked. Together the team raised more than £7,000.
Friend Lorna Dixon said the group will continue with an annual event in Amy’s name to raise money for a charity of the family’s choice.
