Chesterfield has some great entertainment planned for this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-on.

The annual event, organised by Chesterfield Borough Council, takes place on Sunday, December 2.

The event is a firm favourite with old and young with thousands of people expected to turn up to enjoy the day’s entertainment.

The open air market will be bustling and full of gift ideas, and all the high street shops will be waiting to give you a big Christmas welcome.

There will be Christmas Karaoke in Rykneld Square from 1pm and the Pantonic All Stars Steel Band will be playing Christmas tunes to help get you in the festive mood.

A number of walkabout characters will be parading around town for the kids to enjoy.

This year’s Switch-On will have a traditional feel with special guest appearances from Charlie Dimmock, the Organic Fairy in the Pomegranate’s pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, plus Santa and the Mayor of Chesterfield.

And there is some guaranteed snow planned! The fun will start with a stage show by Peak FM from 3pm. The Switch-On takes place in Rykneld Square (next to the Crooked Spire Church) at 4.45 pm.

There is a free Christmas competition in Rykneld Square from 12 noon. The lucky winner will receive a trip to Lapland (for a family of four) in mid-December and the winner will be announced at the Switch-On.

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “We always get a good turn out for the Christmas Lights Switch-on and we’re expecting to have thousands attend again this year.

“We want to encourage people to come into Chesterfield for the Switch-on but to also shop local throughout the whole of the festive period as it plays such an important part in keeping our town centre vibrant and is a great boost for the local economy.“

Chesterfield’s Market Days will be extended to run everyday from Thursday 13 December to, and including Monday 24 December from 9 am to 4 pm. The Flea Market will run on 13th & 20th Dec, the Farmers’ Market on 13th Dec and the General Market on all other days.

Late night shopping starts every Thursday from 29 November and then every day from Monday 17 December through to Saturday 22 December. Most major stores will be open until 7pm and may also have additional opening hours around the Christmas period. Please check with each individual store. You can park for free in any of the Council’s Car Parks after 4pm until late on any of the dates mentioned above and from 8am until late on Sunday 23 December.
