Angry residents say Tesco’s plan to take over a former pub will destroy their village’s community spirit.

Angry residents say Tesco’s plan to take over a former pub will destroy their village’s community spirit.

Villagers have received a letter from the supermarket giant to notify them the White Horse at Old Whittington will become a Tesco Express – as to convert the pub does not require planning permission.

Chris Hannan, of Old Whittington, said: “We’ve got a nice little bakery, a good butchers and sandwich shop at Old Whittington and this is going to affect all of their businesses.

“Local businesses need to be supported and there are four other supermarkets within a mile.

“It’s a shame the pub has shut and we’ve lost another community meeting place.”

Resident Jennifer Hall added: “I live in Old Whittington and this won’t benefit me. I do my shopping at the big Tesco, we don’t need another.”

The new store will add to four Tescos already in Chesterfield as well as stores in Clay Cross and Clowne.

Butcher Richard Bexton, of New Whittington, said: “This will be smack bang in the middle of Old and New Whittington and will take trade from the local shops.

“We’ve got a lovely community here but this could take it away.”

“People need to say enough is enough and keep out of it,” he added.

But Caroline Crapper of New Whittington said she will be using the store.

She added: “Another one does not bother me. I will be using it.

“I think it could affect some shops as they won’t be able to do the same offers.”
