A CABBIE who carried on working in defiance of a driving ban has been locked up.
Phillip Turrell (40) was ordered off the road for six months under the totting-up rules on March 28.
But he was caught at the wheel three times within the next three weeks, Chesterfield magistrates heard.
The court heard Turrell had been working as a taxi driver for Galaxy Travel and was licensed by Chesterfield Borough Council.
He informed the council on June 1 he was disqualified and the authority contacted his employers, who confirmed he had been working.
Turrell, of Holme Hall Crescent, Chesterfield, admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance on April 3, 17 and 18.
He was jailed for 16 weeks and a new, 18-month road ban was imposed by the justices.
“He panicked that he would be out of work and unable to pay his loan and maintenance for his five-year-old daughter ,” said his solicitor, Katie Fowkes.
“He made the foolish decision to take on a couple of taxi jobs and he buried his head in the sand.”
The court heard that Turrell had more recently been working at a food factory.
