Tales behind historic buildings

Celebratory blue plaques have been unveiled to record the fascinating stories behind three of Matlock’s most historic buildings.

On Saturday, January 5, Matlock Civic Association unveiled the plaques at the Horseshoe pub at Matlock Green, the former Crown Hotel at the corner of Crown Square, and Bank Manor.

The Horseshoe was chosen because it was a pub for 150 years and was a focus for Matlock Green’s markets and fairs –which were major annual events for many years.

The former Crown Hotel was selected as a reminder of Matlock’s origins as a Victorian tourist resort.

The reason Bank Manor received a blue plaque is because the building was best known as the Smedley Memorial Hospital, established in 1882 as a memorial to John Smedley.

There are now nine blue plaques on notable Matlock buildings.
