Spire added to controversial signs

NDET 22-5-12 BWJ 1 Chesterfield Signs

NDET 22-5-12 BWJ 1 Chesterfield Signs

NEW signs that stirred up controversy last month when they appeared around town without any reference to our Crooked Spire, have had a mysterious makeover.

Several Welcome to Chesterfield signs across the borough were yesterday (May 22) spotted with images of the famous church stuck on top of the original design, which the Borough Council have confirmed are the work of a graffiti artist, dubbed ‘Chesterfield’s Banksy’.

On the Derbyshire Times Facebook page, fans have voiced their approval at the surprise overhaul.

One, Jenni Griffiths, said: “That looks a lot better” while another, Stu Middleton, added: “Whoever did it..........BRILLIANT!”

The signs, rolled-out by Destination Chesterfield, were installed last month, causing uproar amongst residents who claimed the design didn’t represent the town.

What do you think of the addition?

Keep checking back for the council’s reaction to the changes.
