SmartWater marking on offer to help protect Christmas gifts

Police are holding a property-marking event to allow residents to register their Christmas presents and help deter would-be thieves.

Officers from the Dunston, Moor and St. Helen’s Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are holding a crime prevention event at Holmebrook Valley Park and Littlemoor Shopping Centre next weekend.

Items such as bicycles, laptops, mobile phones, games consoles, sat navs, music players and even vehicles will be security marked on the day using SmartWater.

SmartWater is a forensic based fluid which contains a code that can only be read under ultraviolet light.

PCSO Steve Bircumshaw of the Dunston, Moor and St. Helen’s Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We would encourage everyone to come along on the day and have their valuable new Christmas presents security marked.

“SmartWater can be used on almost anything and can help police to identify your property should it ever be stolen. It can also deter a would-be thief from stealing your valuables.”

The event will take place on Sunday, January 6 and officers will be in the top car park at Holmebrook Valley Park between 10am and 12pm and at Littlemoor Shopping Centre between 1pm and 3pm.

For more information contact the Dunston, Moor and St. Helen’s Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team by calling 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police or emailing chesterfield.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk.
