A former pub is set to be demolished as plans to turn it into a Tesco move a step forward.
Work will begin on Monday to knock down the former White Swan, on Portland Road, Shirebrook, along with flats and houses on Market Close, to make way for a new supermarket.
The complex was purchased by Tesco around four years ago but has been blighted by problems including break-ins, thefts and anti-social behaviour.
Bolsover District Council’s cabinet member for community safety, Cllr Brian Murray-Carr, said: “This will be music to residents’ ears. We have been trying for ages now to get this situation resolved and at long last we have some light at the end of the tunnel.
“At one stage we even offered to carry out the demolition ourselves and reclaim the costs from the site owners.
“We would now ask for everyone’s co-operation during the demolition so it can be done as quickly and as effectively as possible and we can rid the town of this blight.”
Tesco said it will be submitting a further planning application for this site but no date has been confirmed.
Adam Williams, of Tesco, said: “We understand the community’s concerns about the derelict buildings on the site and are working closely with the council to demolish them. Once the electricity supply to the site has been safely cut off we hope to start the demolition.”
