Fire crews were called to Bakewell after a “serious” fire broke out at St Anselm’s School.

The blaze, which is thought to have started in a boiler room, caused substantial damage to the boarding school’s sports complex and roof.

Fire fighters from Bakewell, Matlock, Buxton, Hathersage, Bradwell, Whaley Bridge, Chesterfield and Ripley attended the fire on Stanage Road at around 11pm on Saturday, January 5.

Emergency teams worked through the night to get the fire under control.

A spokesman for the fire service said they had faced a serious blaze adding it was a “rapidly escalating, challenging fire.”

The school reopened on Monday, January 7.
