Motorists travelling through Eckington have had a stark reminder about safe driving following a campaign to check traffic.
Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team were joined by CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team), VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency) and HM Revenue and Customs.
The checks were carried out on Pinfold Street at Eckington on Wednesday, September 5. A mixture of warnings and fixed penalty notices were issued to:
49 drivers and passengers for not wearing a seatbelt.
15 drivers for a registration plate offence
Nine drivers for using their mobile phone while driving.
Three drivers for tyre defects.
Two motorists, whose tinted front windows were found to be below the legal visibility level, all removed the tints after being stopped.
VOSA also issued two immediate prohibition notices to drivers for defects on vehicles which seriously affect their roadworthiness.
The owners then have to have their vehicle inspected at an MOT centre before they can legally drive on the public highway.
Sgt Tony Klenczar, of the Eckington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The main aim is to remind motorists of their responsibilities, this includes making sure their vehicles are roadworthy, to driving carefully and with respect for local speed limits.
“Road safety is something that affects everyone and we hope these operations will encourage motorists to do their bit to help make roads safer for the whole community.”
Operation Safedrive checks continue to take place throughout the county and the team hope to plan future operations in the North East Derbyshire area.
