Royal regard for tremendous effort

Her Majesty the Queen has rewarded the glittering stars of the Dales for their efforts within the community.

The Queen has hand picked worthy people to appear on her New Year’s Honours List.

Among them is Carol Taylor, director of development and research at the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, who was honoured with an OBE for services to adults learning.

Carol, of Old Hackney Lane, Matlock, was the director of Derbyshire’s literacy initiative ‘Read On Write Away!’, a ground–breaking organisation launched by Derbyshire County Council in 1997, which achieved national and international importance for its innovation and appeal to learners of all ages.

She then became joint director of the Basic Skills Agency in London which she merged with the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE).

The 59–year–old commented: “I’m amazed and really pleased to receive this award, which also reflects the value of adult learning especially for those who are taking the brave step of coming back to learning as an adult.”

Nicholas George Warren, of Hope Valley, was also awarded an OBE for his services to the voluntary sector.
