An historic Chesterfield pub claims to have more than your usual spirits behind the bar, and has called in ghost hunters to investigate the spooky goings-on.
Glasses have spontaneously smashed, lights switched on, ghostly footsteps heard and barrels have moved around in a locked cellar, at the Sun Inn.
Just in time for Halloween, the pub in West Bars, called in paranormal expert Stephanie Thomas to try and solve the mystery once and for all.
Landlord Richard Younger, who runs the pub with his wife Marigold, said a ‘ghostly coachman’ whose murdered body was thrown down a well in the cellar in the 18th century was to blame for much of the spooky activity.
However, the inn is also believed to have ghostly residents living upstairs including the spirit of a little girl.
Richard said: “There have been quite a few eerie goings-on. We had finished for the night and were switching all the lights off when our pot washer said he was pushed in the back. It scared him to death.”
He added: “I’ve heard bumps and bangs in the night and seen stuff moving about. I was a bit nervous at first and wouldn’t like to be here on my own.”
Customers have reported seeing a ghostly presence sitting in the corner of the pub and a girl asleep in a room upstairs felt somebody grab her ankles and try to pull her out of bed.
After exploring the pub, including the infamous haunted cellar Stephanie, a Feng Shui specialist, said she was convinced the pub was haunted.
She added: “I can feel a very strong presence. I think there is more than one,. There are definitely energies within this pub.”
The pub is hosting Halloween fancy dress and ghost tours.
