DERBYSHIRE’S High Sheriff has been finding out more about policing in the Chesterfield area.
Alan Woods, who was appointed High Sheriff of Derbyshire in April, and his wife Sheila spent the day with officers at Chesterfield police station on Wednesday, October 17.
Mr Woods spent time meeting with senior and frontline officers, took a tour of the custody area, found out more about the teams who help look after vulnerable people and the work of financial investigators.
He also spent time with the Chesterfield Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team who took them out on foot patrol with them in the town centre.
Chief Superintendent Karl Smethem, who is in charge of policing in Chesterfield, Bolsover, North East Derbyshire and the Amber Valley, said: “I was delighted to welcome the High Sheriff to Chesterfield Divisional Headquarters and to speak to him about policing in the area.
“Mr Woods spent time meeting a number of our staff and officers, learning about the various roles they work in, all with the aim of making our area which includes Chesterfield, North Derbyshire, Bolsover and the Amber Valley, a safer place to live, work and visit.”
The High Sheriff is the Queen’s ceremonial representative in Derbyshire for issues relating to the judiciary and the maintenance of law and order.
He also supports a number of local charities and causes, including initiatives that aim to keep local communities safe and help prevent young people from falling into the criminal justice system in the first place.
Duties carried out as part of the role of High Sheriff include attending any royal visits to the county and sitting in court with judges and magistrates.
Mr Woods said: “We enjoyed visiting Chesterfield Police Station and to see their wide ranging policing activities. Their professionalism and dedication to duty was impressive and for all that they do within the county to ensure safer neighbourhoods, we say thank you.”
The visit took place as part of Mr Wood’s tour of police stations across the county.
