Police appeal after shed break-in

Police are appealing for information after items including a chainsaw and £30 worth of alcoholic drinks were stolen during a shed burglary on New Year’s Eve.

Thieves broke into the shed in the back garden of a house in Chesterfield Road, Two Dales, Matlock, while the owners were out celebrating the New Year.

A Stihl chainsaw, worth around £100, a ‘No Fear’ rucksack and several bottles of spirits were stolen from inside the shed, the lock of which had been broken.

The offence took place between 6pm on December 31 and 2.30pm on January 1, when it was discovered by the homeowners and reported to police.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101, quoting crime reference 185/13. You can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The burglary has prompted renewed calls from police for shed owners to boost home security.

Crime prevention advice includes:

Buy and fit a shed alarm. Discounted shed alarms are available through Derbyshire police or Derbyshire Dales District Council;

Invest in a decent quality padlock for your shed;

Have a security light fitted on the rear of your property, which will be triggered by anyone approaching the house or shed;

Store any valuable items out of sight in the shed or, with particularly high value goods, keep them inside your house.

Operation Illuminate is a campaign by the Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, which is led by the police and the district council.

Various cut-price home security goods including shed alarms (£5 each, RRP £8) are available to Derbyshire Dales residents as part of the operation.

To find out where you can buy one, call your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or Derbyshire Dales District Council on 01629 761 100.
