New year surprise

New years day baby. Rebeccah and Richard Simmons with new born Heidi and brother Lewis.

ONE Dales toddler had a very surprising New Year’s Day present when his parents returned home from the supermarket with a little sister for him.

Expectant parents Rebecca and Richard Simmons, of Darley Dale, told their 5-year-old son Lewis that they were “heading to Morrisons” on New Years Eve – when they were actually going for a routine pregnancy appointment.

But the check-up revealed Rebecca’s unborn baby was having heart troubles and a decision was taken to induce labour immediately.

At 1.28am on New Years Day, Heidi Julie Simmons was born at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Rebecca and Heidi returned home at 2pm on New Years day to a surprised, but happy, Lewis.

Rebecca said: “Even though Heidi was two weeks early she’s absolutely fine now. What a way to start the new year, though.”
