A HUMAN resources professional from Chesterfield has opened a new office to provide practical employment advice and support to small and medium-sized employers in the region.

Steve Hardman from Wingerworth has launched The HR Dept Chesterfield to help businesses across Chesterfield, Bolsover, Clay Cross, Staveley, Markham Vale, Shirebrook, Clowne and Eckington with their HR needs, whether they are employing their first member of staff or have several hundred employees.

Steve brings with him 20 years’ experience in HR. He has held positions at senior levels across a range of sectors including mining, IT, outsourcing, retail, business process outsourcing (BPO) and contact centres, data capture and engineering consultants and has worked within both UK and world-leading companies as well as with small businesses.

Now he is looking forward to using his expertise, which includes employee and industrial relations, performance management, absence management, recruitment for start-up businesses upwards, restructuring projects and redundancies to benefit local employers.

Steve said: “Due to the nature of SME businesses, owners and directors often can’t afford the time to deal with the complexities of employment and HR properly – which is where we aim to help by bringing a local, personal and affordable service to the marketplace.

“I’m an uncomplicated sort, and that’s the kind of service I look to provide. I relish the challenge of solving employment problems in pragmatic and practical ways that also meet the culture and business needs of each client.”

The HR Dept was launched in Bristol in 2003 by Sue Tumelty, a senior experienced human resources professional who was motivated by the desire to give small business clients the same levels of support, advice and expertise enjoyed by much larger organisations with their own HR departments.

The company now has 43 offices across England and 2 in Wales, each owned and managed by experienced HR professionals.

Sue said: “Too many businesses are hampered because management time is eaten up in dealing with HR issues. We’re delighted that Steve has joined the team to help resolve those ‘people problems’ for employers across Chesterfield, freeing up owners and managers to focus on growing their businesses instead.”

Steve, who is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and a member of many local business organisations, says that his aim is to establish The HR Dept Chesterfield as the HR support service of choice serving the 8500 strong SME market in his area.

He added: “Our recent client survey found that more than 9 out of 10 clients would recommend The HR Dept to other businesses. With an advice line for telephone support, an insurance policy which protects employers from tribunals provided our advice is followed and the backing of the nationwide HR Dept team, alongside my local knowledge and expertise, I think we have a very strong and very different HR service to offer local businesses.”

Outside of his business Steve is a passionate golfer, loves foreign travel, and although he was adept at many athletic and ball sports in his younger days, says he now resorts to watching them rather than participating!
