Police have slammed “mindless” yobs who smashed a number of windows at a historic church on two separate occasions.

Offenders damaged the stained glass panels at St Mary and St Lawrence Church, on High Street, Bolsover, sometime between 4pm on Monday, January 20 and 9am today. Previous damage was done sometime overnight between Wednesday, January 8 and Thursday, January 9.

PCSO Ben Perry, of the Bolsover Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been making enquiries in the local area.

He said: “The windows are protected by mesh, but someone has managed to use something to damage parts of the stained glass.

“The damage is pretty mindless and shows a lack of respect towards a community focal point.

“Someone in the community must have some information about who’s doing this and we won’t stop until those responsible are in court.

“I would urge anyone who saw, or knows anything about the incidents, to contact us,” he added.

Revd Rachel Gouldthorpe, of St Mary and St Lawrence Church, said they were “unfortunate” incidents and called on witnesses or anyone with information to call Derbyshire police.

Anyone with information about the crime call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Grade II listed church was gutted by fire in 1897, rebuilt in 1898 then damaged by another devastating blaze in 1960.
