The Royal British Legion in Ripley is campaigning to install a memorial in Crossley Park to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One.

Members of the Ripley and District branch of the legion want the memorial to be ready in time for Remembrance Sunday 2014 and are calling on local businesses for sponsorship or donations.

Legion chairman Dean Fowler said: “Next year the whole country will be commemorating the start of World War One. This is a time of reflection and remembrance for those who fell on the front line and the countless others who became casualties of this dreadful war. Had it not been for the sheer determination of the nation and the Commonwealth we would not be enjoying the safety, freedom and democracy that we do today.”
