When Isaac Smith first set eyes on the new girl next door, it was to be the start of a long-lasting and beautiful relationship.
The smitten lad met his new next-door neighbour and future wife, Joan, when she moved to Old Whittington with her family more than seven decades ago.
The pair got to know each other, fell in love and tied the knot at St Bartholomew’s Church, Old Whittington.
Last Wednesday, a remarkable 70 years later, Mr and Mrs Smith celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.
The dedicated couple, of Gipsy Lane, Old Whittington, marked the momentous moment with a family get-together.
Over the years, Mr and Mrs Smith had various jobs and together they owned a grocery shop in Brampton and worked in the pub trade.
They have two daughters, Ann and Carol, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In their spare time, Mr and Mrs Smith – aged 92 and 90 – enjoy watching television and spending time with family.
Daughter Ann Briggs said: “We’re ever so pleased for them.
“They’re a lovely couple and so proud to be marking their platinum wedding anniversary - it’s a huge achievement.”
She added that Mr and Mrs Smith said “always doing things together” was the key to a long and happy marriage.
