A POPULAR Chesterfield market trader has died aged 63.

Terry Meakin, who was born and brought up in Ripley, sold menswear on Chesterfield market for 38 years until his retirement five years ago.

He was also a past president of the National Market Traders Federation and served as president of the Chesterfield branch from 1994 to 2003.

Terry became chairman of the NMTF Benevolent Fund Committee from January 2010 until his death.

His partner, Jean Nash, said: “Terry loved market trading and he was a great supporter of his fellow traders. He was so pleased to get involved in the Benevolent Fund and dedicated his last years to trying to help traders in need.”

Terry was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in 2008 and died on August 17. He leaves his partner, Jean, his parents, Florence and Maurice, and a sister, Diane.

His previous long-term partner, Carol, died 11 years ago.

Terry’s funeral was held at St John the Baptist Church, Ault Hucknall, yesterday (August 29).
