A homeowner said she broke down in tears when she saw the state of her property - which had been destroyed in a blaze started by a burglar.
Over £40,000 worth of damage was caused to Kay Marsh’s home in Bramley Road,Bramley Vale, following an arson attack in March.
Last week Sean Sisson, 24, was jailed for seven years after pleading guilty to raiding 20 homes across Chesterfield and committing reckless arson.
During Sisson’s crime spate he raided Mrs Marsh’s house, which she rented to two tenants, before setting fire to an armchair.
Severe smoke damage was caused to the property and the couple’s cat was killed.
Mrs Marsh said: “When I saw the house I stood at the back door and cried. My mum said ‘don’t worry it’s only material things’ but I was so shocked by the scale of it.”
The house has been completely refurbished over the last five months including fitting a new kitchen, new bathrooms, windows, doors and complete replastering.
Mrs Marsh, who grew up in Bramley Vale but now lives in Doncaster, said: “When I went round the property it was a really eerie experience. All the windows were black, cracked and broken.”
She added: “I felt for the people who lived there as they had lost their home and photographs and possessions which can’t be replaced.”
Mrs Marsh said she was pleased justice had been done but added: “He never gave a thought to anyone who could have been asleep in the property or to the fish in the tank or the pet cat that died.”
