Holiday nearly axed amid passport woes

A family say they were on the brink of cancelling their long-awaited holiday because of the ongoing passport fiasco.

Jamie and Carly Donald and their five-year-old daughter Heidi endured a three-month wait for their passports ahead of their ten-day summer break to Gran Canaria.

The documents finally arrived within a week when Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins stepped in – and now he is urging other families in a similar position to contact him.

Mr Donald, 38, of Brimington, said: “It’s been a very traumatic experience and we’ve not really been able to look forward to the holiday – our first in six years.

“I was on the verge of cancelling it when I phoned Toby and he got everything sorted within a week. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Home Secretary Theresa May has apologised to the thousands of families who are experiencing delays with passport applications.

There has been an unusually high demand for passports this year, she said.

Mr Perkins said: “While the Government argues about the causes of the passport crisis, the reality for families is that long-planned and hard-earned getaways are being put at severe risk by this shambles.
