Highways chiefs issue ice warning

Motorists are being warned to take extra care on the roads over the next few days.

Temperatures are forecast to dip to below freezing and with floodwater still standing on many of the county’s roads this is expected to make driving conditions extremely difficult.

Councillor Simon Spencer, deputy leader of the county council, said: “The ground is completely saturated with all the rain.

“That means we’re likely to see water running from adjacent land on to the road for a few days yet – particularly in rural areas.

“If temperatures drop, any grit could be washed away and there’ll be little we can do to help prevent wet roads turning icy, so drivers should take extreme care.”

The Met Office has issued an alert for cold weather in Derbyshire and called on people to be prepared.
