GRITTER drivers at Derbyshire County Council are gearing up for a busy weekend ahead.
With freezing temperatures forecast and the possibility of snow in some areas in the days ahead, gritter drivers will be on standby around the clock to help keep the county’s roads clear.
Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We’ve got around 19,000 tonnes of grit in stock and we’ll be out across the county treating around 1,555 miles of roads – around half the roads we look after which is more than most councils.
“We use the latest weather forecasting technology and road temperature sensors to decide when our gritters need to go out and how much grit they need to spread, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on the conditions so that we can act quickly as and when we need to.”
Cllr Spencer added: “We’re encouraging residents to do the responsible and neighbourly thing by shifting their own snow and any that their more vulnerable neighbours can’t do themselves.
“There’s no health and safety reason not to.”
