Buxton’s reputation for excellence in the arts is set to grow with the launch of a new community arts space in the town.
The Green Man Gallery at fiveways junction, Higher Buxton, opened its doors on Saturday after an exciting collaboration between Buxton organisations.
The ‘Unit 8 Art Collective’ was approached by Vision Buxton director Julie Collins who saw the idea as an opportunity to complement the growing independent shopping in Higher Buxton.
With collective member and fellow Vision Buxton director Neil Scowcroft, she secured an exciting agreement to lease the old corner furniture shop ‘Alexanders’ to the group for at least six months. All four floors of the building are being utilised, including a bright attic space where artists can work.
“Some of the most exciting independent shops and businesses are appearing in Higher Buxton and let’s hope that continues,” said Neil.
Hundreds of visitors attended the opening evening when collective Chairman, Buxton artist Martin Olsson, said: “The Green Man Gallery has been given the chance to make a real difference to the artistic output in Buxton.”
Martin has been involved in ‘pop-up’ projects in the town before when The 4 Artists group took over an empty shop in The Old Courthouse for a summer in 2010.
The Green Man Gallery will showcase the talents and products of 15 local artists and craftspeople with a variety of work including painting, illustration, photography, sculpture, aromatics, jewellery and mixed media pieces.
Exhibitions and a range of affordable, accessible workshops will be taking place throughout 2013 and the group believes that it will grow into a productive arts hub for the whole community.
“We’re hoping other artists and groups will contact us to help realise the potential of the space,” says group member Michael Clement.
“The Fiveways junction is a very visible part of our town and its going to be fun adding some colour there”.
The artists will be manning the gallery themselves every day of the week and anyone wishing to get involved or looking for unique Christmas presents are very welcome to call in for a chat or a browse.
