FIREFIGHTERS used hydraulic cutting gear to rescue a trapped woman following a road traffic collision between two vehicles.

The collision happened on High Lane, at Walton, Chesterfield, about 2.30pm, on Monday, between a Toyota Yaris and a Peugeot 206.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “One casualty was released before the arrival of the fire service but the other driver remained trapped because of her injuries and damage to the vehicle.

“Hydraulic cutting equipment was used to remove the vehicle’s roof and release the female casualty.”

Police confirmed that the roof of the Toyota Yaris was removed and the trapped woman driver was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and her injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Officers closed the road in both directions during the rescue which was attended by an ambulance and an air ambulance and the area was made safe by about 4pm.

A police spokesman added: “The woman driver of the other vehicle also went to Chesterfield Royal Hospital but her injuries are not thought to be serious.”

Witnesses are urged to call Derbyshire police on (01773) 572929.
