Derbyshire health chiefs have backed a new Government campaign aimed at encouraging smokers to kick the habit in October.
The national ‘Stoptober’ campaign is being promoted by local health officials who hope to help 1,000 Derbyshire smokers quit for a month.
Tina Jones, tobacco control programme manager at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get lots of people to quit smoking.
“By chunking the quitting process down to 28 days, it gives smokers more chance of kicking the habit for good.”
Bruce Laurence, acting director of public health at NHS Derbyshire County, added: “We fully support this campaign which will add great collective energy to the efforts of individuals.
“What’s more, if you smoke 20 a day and quit at the beginning of October, you’ll have almost £500 extra to spend on yourself and your family by Christmas.”
Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust’s stop-smoking team will be at Chesterfield FC’s ground on Saturday to launch the drive, which is being run by the Department for Health.
Advisors will hand out information, advice and guidance to Spireites supporters who want to quit smoking.

The ‘Stoptober’ campaign will involve TV and radio advertising, a daily messaging service and roadshows around the country.
