DERBYSHIRE: Ice warnings as big freeze continues

Chesterfield railway station

Chesterfield railway station

FURTHER snowfall and continued low temperatures have made for icy conditions this morning, Saturday, January 19, for Derbyshire residents.

Sudden downpours during Thursday evening forced some Friday school closures countywide and more snow during Friday has made for dangerous conditions on pavements and roads today.

The Met Office has given more snow warnings for today and warned people to expect further disruption as ice begins to cause problems.

Temperatures over the weekend are expected to fall as low as 0 degrees to minus 1 degree centigrade.

National Rail warned there could be disruptions to rail services but so far East Midlands train service is operating a full time table for today but people are advised to keep making checks as staff work to reduce any disruptions or delays.

The M1 motorway is clear and traffic is moving smoothly and Snake Pass is open but hazardous.

Many football fixtures have been postponed including today’s Torquay v Chesterfield game.

The forecast for Saturday includes snow flurries and a maximum temperature of 2 degrees with similar conditions tomorrow.
