A community has launched a major fundraising drive to pay for a severely brain damaged man to have ground-breaking treatment.
Stan Padley, 53, of Wingerworth was left unable to speak and confined to a wheelchair after a routine operation to treat arthritis.
To date doctors have been unable to say what happened during the ‘hip resurfacing procedure’ but a CT scan revealed three parts of Stan’s brain had been damaged.
Carers and friends have now launched a bid to raise £50,000 to pay for Stan to have pioneering stem cell treatment which could see him speak again.
Carers Catherine Jolley and Julie Clarke, of Wingerworth, who work for Daisy Chain home services, helped launch the campaign at the Barley Mow pub.
Catherine said: “Stan has become a regular at the Barley Mow and has got to know everyone and they all think he’s a wonderful chap.
“Everyone feels sorry about what has happened to him and want to do all they can to help.”
The pub’s football team as well as businesses from the village are also on board with the fundraising.
Catherine added: “This treatment will make a massive difference to him and improve his quality of life.
“As well as being able to speak he will be able to clean his teeth by himself and taste food again without being peg-fed.”
The fundraising will kick off with a sponsored slim which starts with a weigh-in on November 6 at the Barley Mow.
Anyone is welcome to take part and sponsor forms are available at the pub.
A quiz and fun night is also set to take place at the pub on November 10 and on November 24 a rock and roll night will be hosted at the Last Orders pub in Clay Cross.
An auction and charity ball are also planned for the future.
The treatment will be carried out in China and sees stem cells inserted close to damaged parts of the brain.
Although unable to speak, Stan, who lives with wife Kay and the couple’s three dogs in Chartwell Avenue, is able to communicate through a computer.
He said: “I would just like to say how thankful I am to Daisy Chain home services for all they have done for us.
“Catherine and Julie have been just wonderful, they are my carers who transport me for my socialising and they have done so much.
“I am very excited at the prospect of all the events taking place.”
He added: “I feel very humble towards the people who have donated so far.
“It has made me see the world in a different light.
“I am so happy and looking forward to the future even more. With Kay and my friends by my side I feel anything is possible now.”
