RESIDENTS are urged to attend Remembrance Services across the region to honour those who have lost their lives in military conflicts.
The north Derbyshire family of deceased hero Cpl Liam Riley, of killamarsh, will no doubt join residents during their village’s ceremony which coincides with many others nationwide on Sunday, November 11.
Cpl Riley, who became a friend of Prince Harry during training, was killed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, by a bomb in 2010 while trying to rescue a comrade. His family including mum Cheryl Routledge and Auntie Marie Gregg have also recently been crowned with a Help for Heroes award for fundraising.
Chesterfield Mayor Don Parsons, of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Remembrance is a special day for many who have lived through wars or lost families and loved ones in past and present conflicts.”
Chesterfield’s Civic Remembrance service starts at 2.30pm, at the Crooked Spire, followed by a parade to the War Memorial, on Rose Hill, and wreath-laying at 3.15pm.
Bolsover’s ceremony will be held from 10.35am, at Bolsover Castle, with a parade to Bolsover Parish Church, before moving to the town’s Cenotaph for about 11.30am. One resident appealed for a big turn-out including force members and veterans. Matlock Remembrance services will be held from 11am, at Pic Tor memorial, from 11.30am, at Starkholmes War Memorial, with a parade from Edgefield Road, at 2.45pm, and a Remembrance Service will take place at Hall Leys Park Head.
